Philadelphia’s coffee scene has experienced an impressive boom in the last few years. Whether you are in Fishtown, Queen Village, or South Philly, it isn’t hard to find a place to get caffeinated. Here are my favorite spots, old and new, chic and cozy, craft and classic, to seek refuge and get caffeinated in the City of Brotherly Love.

ULTIMO

Ultimo in South Philadelphia will forever be one of my favorite cafes in the city. Aside from serving Counter Culture Coffee, they offer an abundance of beer when you desire more than a caffeine buzz. There are hundreds of bottles and ten drafts to enjoy in house or take away (including growlers). Ultimo also has a few tables outside to indulge in the sun.

Elixr Coffee Roasters

Elixr offers high quality locally roasted coffee in the heart of Center City. The allure of the already gorgeous space is amplified by rotating mural art installations. Free wifi and an abundance of power outlets make it a popular spot for the laptop crowd.

Ox Coffee

Ox Coffee is one of the newer additions to Philly’s coffee scene. The warm and welcoming space serves Stumptown Coffee and provides a refuge from the bustle of South Street. Donating a record to their already stellar music collection will get you a free coffee. No wifi so leave your work at home and enjoy the good company or quaint garden.

Chapterhouse Cafe and Gallery

Chapterhouse is a great cafe to linger and admire the work of local artists. Aside from great free trade coffee (and cheap refills), they have a number of board games in house to keep you entertained. Great music, good vibes, free wifi, poetry readings. They also have an extensive tea selection.

One Shot

One Shot is the place to go in Northern Liberties. In addition to Stumptown, they often feature pour-overs from Philly favorites ReAnimator and Rival Bros Coffee. From the fresh pastries to the seasonal brunch classics, the grub never disappoints. The upstairs space is wonderfully cozy for lounging unless the sun is beckoning you to sit at one of the outside tables.

La Colombe Fishtown

La Colombe’s new location in Fishtown has taken the coffee shop to the next level. The chic warehouse space has an on-site rum distillery, bakery, and restaurant to deliver everything you desire. Do yourself a favor and try a skillet, the vegetable version blew my mind. No wifi.
